The design for the new urban district in Klagenfurt is based upon a grid and combines two different typologies in one building structure: Horizontal perimeter blocks enclose communal courtyards and culminate in vertical elements. The main purpose of the project is to develop a resilient urban framework which gives people the freedom to define their own space. The concept allows to arrange a huge variety of different programs on the site. The porosity of the design proposal creates a continuous public space that permeates the site and connects the new district with the existing urban context. Through the interplay of architecture, function, landscape and the clever integration into the surroundings, a new urban ensemble is created, which should make a positive contribution to the urban development of Klagenfurt.
